Base of ch. Work in first stitch

Size to fit approx:-  2-3 years
Use larger hooks to make bigger mittens

Materials
50 grams of King Cole big value baby DK

OR
1.75oz of Worsted Weight #3 Yarn
5.50mm & 4.50mm Crochet Hooks

GAUGE - 5sc & 5 rows of sc measures approx 1 Inch square

Mittens x 2 (Starting with cuff) - Using 5.50mm hook ch17, change to 4.50mm hook,
work 1sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1sc in each ch to end. Turn. (16sc)

Next Row - Working in back loop of stitch only, ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each sc
to end. Turn. Rpt last row 18 more times, making 20 rows in all.

Fold in half, (bottom to top) sl st both sides together to make a round. Do not fasten off.

Lower Body of Mitt

First round - Working in row ends along top of cuff, ch1, 1sc in each row end around,
sl st to first sc. Turn. (20sc)

Second Round - Working through both loops from now on ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc
in each sc to end, sl st to first sc. Turn.

Third Round - (Inc Row) ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each of next 8sc, 2sc in next sc, 1sc in each of next 9sc, 2sc in next sc, sl st to first sc. Turn. (22sc)

Fourth Round - (Inc Row) ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each of next 9sc, 2sc in next sc, 1sc in each of next 10sc, 2sc in next sc, sl st to first sc. Turn. (24sc)

Fifth Round - (Inc Row) ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each of next 10sc, 2sc in next sc, 1sc in each of next 11sc, 2sc in next sc, sl st to first sc. Turn. (26sc)

Next Row - ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each sc to end. Turn. Rpt last round once. Turn.

Space for Thumb - ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each of next 21sc, ch4, skip last 4sc,
sl st to first sc. Turn.

Upper Body of Mitt
Ninth Round - ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each of next ch4, 1sc in each of next 21sc,
sl st to first sc. Turn. (26sc)

Tenth to Sixteenth Round - ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each sc to end. Turn.

Seventeenth Round - (Dec Row) ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each of next 10sc, dec 1sc over next 2sc, (see abbrev) 1sc in each of next 11sc, dec 1sc over next 2sc, sl st to
first sc. Turn. (24sc)

Eighteenth Round - (Dec Row) ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each of next 9sc, dec
1sc over next 2sc, 1sc in each of next 10sc, dec 1sc over next 2sc, sl st to first sc. Turn. (22sc)

Nineteenth Round - (Dec Row) ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each of next 8sc, dec
1sc over next 2sc, 1sc in each of next 9sc, dec 1sc over next 2sc, sl st to first sc. Turn. (20sc)

Twentieth Round - (Dec Row) ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each of next 7sc, dec
1sc over next 2sc, 1sc in each of next 8sc, dec 1sc over next 2sc, sl st to first sc. Turn. (18sc)

Twenty First Round - (Dec Row) ch1, * dec 1sc over next 2sc, * rpt from * to * to end,
sl st to first sc. Fasten off leaving length of yarn to gather top. (9sc)

Make Thumb - With cuff facing away from you using 4.50mm hook re-join yarn to opposite side of the third of the 4ch's, ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in next ch, work 8 more sc evenly around thumb hole to end, sl st to first sc. Turn. (10sc)

Next Round - ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each sc to end. Turn. Rpt last round five
more times.

Next Round - (Dec Row) ch1, dec 1sc over next 2sc, 1sc in each of next 3sc, dec 1sc
over next 2sc, 1sc in each sc to end, sl st to first sc. Turn. (8sc)

Next Round - (Dec Row) ch1, * dec 1sc over next 2sc, * rpt from * to * to end, sl st to first sc. Fasten off leaving a small length of yarn to gather top. (4sc)

Finishing - Gather top of thumb, sew in and tie off loose end of yarn, rpt for top of mitt, turn mitt through onto RS, fold cuff in half.

Optional
Make a chain length to join one mitt to the other, when wearing thread the mitts through coat sleeves (to help stop losing a mitt)
