Cowl and Beanie

USA Format

RS.     Right Side
ch.      Chain
sc.      Single Crochet
hdc.    Half Double Crochet
dc.      Double Crochet
rpt.     Repeat
sl st.   Slip Stitch

Group.  (1sc, 2dc) in same stitch or space

Base of ch. Work in first stitch

Finished size approx:  
Beanie - Adult - circumference 21 - 22 inches
Cowl - 13 inches x 5.5 inches

Materials
110 grams of Stylecraft special DK in Wisteria (1432)

OR
3.88oz of Worsted Weight #3 yarn
6.00mm & 5.50mm crochet hooks
3 decorative buttons

GAUGE - 4hdc and 3 rows measure approx 1 Inch using 5.50mm hook

Cowl - With 5.50mm hook ch105, sl st to first ch to form a ring

Next Row - ch1, (1sc, 2dc) in base of ch1, * skip 2ch, (1sc, 2dc) in next ch, * rpt from * to * to last 2ch, skip last 2ch, sl st to first sc on beginning of row. Turn. (35 groups)

Pattern Row - ch1, (1sc, 2dc) in base of ch1, * skip 2dc, (1sc, 2dc) in next sc, * rpt from * to * to last 2dc, skip last 2dc, sl st to first sc on beginning of row. Turn.

Rpt Pattern Row until 15 rows have been worked in all. Turn.

Starting with ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, work 1sc in each dc and sc to end,
sl st to first sc. Turn. (105sc) Work one more row of sc. Fasten off.

Return and join yarn to cast on edge, work 1sc in each ch to end, sl st to first sc on beginning of row. Turn. (105sc) Work one more row of sc. Fasten off.

Finishing - Weave in all loose ends of yarn and trim, attach decorative buttons.

Beanie - (Made in continues rounds without turning to brim) - With 5.50mm hook ch6, sl st in 1st ch to form a ring, (RS) ch2, work 13hdc in ring, sl st to top ch2 on beginning of row. (13hdc + ch2)

2nd Row - ch2, 1hdc in base of ch2, 2hdc in each hdc to end, sl st to top of ch2 on beginning of row. (27hdc + ch2)

3rd Row - ch2, 1hdc in base of ch2, 1hdc in next hdc, * 2hdc in next hdc, 1hdc in next hdc, * rpt from * to * to end, sl st to top of ch2 on beginning of row. (42hdc + ch2)

4th Row - ch2, 1hdc in base of ch2, 1hdc in each of next 2hdc, * 2hdc in next hdc, 1hdc in each of next 2hdc * rpt from * to * to end, sl st to top of ch2 on beginning of row. (55hdc + ch2)

5th Row - ch2, 1hdc in base of ch2, 1hdc in each of next 3hdc, * 2hdc in next hdc, 1hdc in each of next 3hdc, * rpt from * to * to end, sl st to top of ch2 on beginning of row. (68hdc + ch2)

Your work will look frilled at this point because of the increasing.

6-21st Row - ch2, 1hdc in each hdc to end, sl st to top of ch2 on beginning of row.

Brim - Using 6.00mm hook, ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each hdc to end, sl st to first sc on beginning of row. Turn. (69sc)

Working in back loop of stitch only for this row ch1, (1sc, 2dc) in base of ch1, * skip 2sc, (1sc, 2dc) in next sc, * rpt from * to * to last 2sc, skip last 2sc, sl st to first sc on beginning of row. Turn. (23 groups)

Working through both loops of stitch from now on, Work Pattern Row from cowl until 8 rows have been worked in all for brim. Fasten off.

Finishing - Weave starting thread around hole on crown and pull gently to close, weave in all other loose ends of yarn, trim all ends. Fold brim back onto front of beanie, attach decorative buttons.
